Corrugated Fiberboard
The Corrugator
The Corrugator is the machine used to make combined corrugated fibreboard.
It stands 15 to 20 feet high, 12 or more feet wide, and roughly 300 feet in length.
A new unit, with all the options, can cost $5 million or more. Roll stands hold the giant rolls of linerboard and corrugated material in place.
For each roll position, there are usually two stands. As the first roll runs out, or as the order is completed and a different basis weight, width or color must be put in place for the next order, the machine is slowed and a "flying splicer" connects the second roll.
For single-wall corrugated board, there must be six roll stands and three splicers. If the corrugator is equipped to make double-wall board, there must be ten stands and five splicers. Triple-wall board requires 14 roll stands and seven splicers.
A typical corrugator runs at speeds of up to 1,000 feet per minute, slowing to 300 feet per minute during roll changes. A typical roll of linerboard or corrugated material will last a little more than an hour.
Solid Fibreboard
Solid fibre sheets are constructed by gluing two or more flat plies of paperboard together. Usually, the outer ply is linerboard, and the other plies are corrugated material or filler paperboards. The inner ply also may be linerboard
Regular Slotted Container - RSC
All flaps are the same depth, and the two outer flaps (normally the lengthwise flaps) are 1/2 the container's width, so that they meet at the center of the box when folded. This is a highly efficient design. The only overlaps are the flap for a glued or stitched manufacturer's joint, and the inner (or minor) flaps. There is very little manufacturing waste. The RSC can be used for most products, and is the most common box style. If the product requires a flat, even bottom surface, or the protection of two full layers, a fill-in pad can be placed between the two inner flaps.

Bulk Bin
Bulk Bin
The bulk bin is a large corrugated fibreboard tube or half-slotted body, with one or two covers, frequently of the interlocking type.
This distinction between a box and a bulk bin is not defined, but usually refers to the quantity of contents.
Box: is often the container for 40 pounds of a granular product, or a single refrigerator.
Bulk Bin: is often the container for 3,000 pounds of a granular product ("in bulk"), or 500 towels ("loose" products) or small packages.
Double-Thickness Score-Line Box
These boxes are combinations of other styles, with one telescoping over the other so that there are at least two thicknesses of board over all score lines.
The box is particularly resistant to rough handling.
The style may be used for bulk bins, but is generally used for small, heavy products(motors, bulk nails) weighing up to 300 pounds.
Overlap Slotted Container - OSC
All flaps are the same depth, outer flaps overlap by 1"+.
The box can be closed with staples through the overlap area.
Used when the length of the box is much greater than the width, resulting in a long gap between the inner flaps.
The sealed overlap keeps the outer flaps from pulling apart.

Partitions
Inner packing pieces can be made in a variety of ways to separate, cushion products, strengthen, or prevent product movement by filling voids. They can be shaped as follows:
Simple rectangles
Scored
Slotted
Scored and slotted
Die-cut shapes
Pads: plain rectangles of corrugated or solid fibreboard.
They can be used to fill the space between the inner flaps of an RSC, to completely cover the bottom or top of a box, or to separate layers of product.
Vertically, they can be used to separate products or add stacking strength. Tubes or shells are scored rectangles, folded and some times joined with tape to form a multisided structure open at both ends.
When used as sleeves for individual items such as glassware, adjacent shells provide double protections.
Triangular shells are frequently used for stacking strength in the corners of boxes.
Rectangular shells that are the same size and depth as the box (minus the thickness of the box) are called liners. Partitions or dividers provide a separate cell for each item in the box. They are used primarily for glassware and other fragile articles.
